- Las Animas-Huerfano Counties Distric Health Dept. – Nurturing Parenting Program
The Nurturing Programs, by Stephen J. Bavolek, are designed expressly for preventing and treating child abuse and neglect. A unique feature of Nurturing Parenting Program is that the program provides instruction to parents about how to be more peaceful in raising their children, and also includes guidelines and materials for teaching children and adolescents to be more successful in their relationships with their parents and with others.
The foundation and values of NPP include:
1) Violence of any sort, to any degree, has no positive impact; 2) Empathy is the ability to be aware of the needs of a child; 3) Parents who nurture themselves do a better job being a nurturing parent; and 6) At Nurturing Parenting, parents and children learn to replace bad habits with new good habits.
The NPP is taught in 16 week intervals, with every family member receiving a curriculum book.
In addition to the classes, a total of 7 home visits are made to each family. Currently two 16-week intervals are offered. This grant is in support of establishing a third 16-week interval.
